Hi my name is Jessica, and my dad is in desperate need of a new kidney.
He has Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). The disease cause giant cysts to form on both kidneys, making each one way about 20 Ibs. It also cause kidney failure, and currently his kidneys are only working at 20% or less.
He needs a live transplant, because his kidneys should be removed first.
Unfortunately no one in our family is a match because his blood type is O+, and all of us are different.
My grandfather (his father) died of this disease at 53 years old, and my dad is currently 49. I’m only 15 and still have so much to live through and want him there for it all.

Description of Patient Situation
My wife’s name is Susan, she is 68 years young, we have been married for 47 years. Susan has a disease known as Medullary cystic disease. It is Autosomal Dominant, her mother passed away from the disease in 1959. Her brother and sister died from the disease. Two of our three children have the disease and have been successfully transplanted. Most of our Nieces & Nephews have also been affected by the disease & therefore the problem in getting a family related transplant. Susan was originally transplanted @ Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY on May 30, 1975 by Dr. Samuel Koontz. This cadaver transplant lasted for 33.5 wonderful years. In those 33.5 years she enjoyed excellent health, raised three children and became a loving Grandmother to our four Grandchildren. She exercised every day during those 33 years and did volunteer work at various organizations and at Helen Hayes Hospital (Nyack, NY). She has been on Hemodyalysis since April 12, 2008 & is currently listed at three (3) transplant centers, Columbia Presbyterian (NYC), Jackson Memorial (Miami) Mayo Clinic (Jacksonville, FL.). Her PRA is 0. She is a young 68 and wants to return to an active life, so that she can continue to contribute to our community and be an active participant in the growth and development of our four Grandchildren. Thanks to all of you who are working to raise awareness of the need for donation, for those of you who have donated, and those who are considering. I am 27 and was diagnosed two years ago with polycystic kidney disease. I don’t worry about myself, as I believe there will be a cure before I need a transplant, but my mother is very, very ill from the disease. My sister and I (neither of us can donate) are doing everything we can to find our wonderful, brave mother a kidney donor. Several have been tested, yet none have yet worked out. We do have several potential paired donors who would donate to someone else whose donor would match our mom.
She is 59, a brand new grandma, and my hero. We live in Grand Rapids, Michigan and her transplant center is the University of Michigan. She needs a kidney desperately, to be able to continue working to have health insurance (and income!), see her grandchildren grow up and help the rest of her brothers with their kidney struggles.

Medicare pay pays all your medical expenses and any medication required after the transplant. If you donate your kidney it will be done at transplant center nearest you and shipped my transplant center at Barnes Jewish Hospital. If you don’t match for me the hospital as a paired donor program to match you with someone you match and they would have a match for me they would just swap so both could be transplanted.

A surgical date had been set for May 5/09 and I was so happy cuz my brother was going to donate a kidney to me. 2 days later….they called and informed us that a “human error” had been made and that my sibbling were NOT a match. They had mixed up the blood types!
The transplant operation had to be cancelled and I was devistated along with my family.

I have been reading all the stories and it saddens me to think people/government, are not more giving of life. Or why the government stops those who are wealthy from helping a donor out, which in turn would move someone else up the list. I’ve read it costs over $50,000 a yr for dialysis? Hey i know this is a long shot but my brother is in need of a kidney because he has kidney failure and it happens to be that you are the same blood type as him and he has started dyalysis yet so we are trying out best to find him a kidney so if you are willing to help him he greatly appreciate it. Also the reason i am sending you this is because its so hard to find someone that has O negative blood type. So if you can help him out its would be great.

If you are willing to donate for your sister, you should look into something called “paired matching”. There IS something you can do to help your sister get a kidney. Look up “kidney paired matching” and what you can do is swap your kidney for one that matches your sister, with someone that you are a better match for. This has been done several times, most notably with Johns Hopkins, who just did a 6-way (TWELVE people!!) in April of 2009. Do not give up. Ask about programs that can make your blood type irrelevant. Call Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles and ask for Kidney and Liver transplant and KEEP asking for someone until you find a person who knows about the program to make incompatable ABO types compatable.
My records reflect my dialysis cost $20,454.00 a month but I don’t know what Medicare pays.

I gave him one of my kidneys when he was a child, ( if anyone has questions on what it’s like to be a donor, even for someone else, get in touch, I’d be happy to share my experience), unfortunately that kidney had to be removed when he was 19, and he now needs another one.
He has a high PRA, (antibody count) 96%, not good, the potential match of a cadaver is only with 3 to 4% of the world’s population.
It would literally take a miracle for him to match a cadaver.
His only hope at this point is to find a living donor, so that he could go through antibody recovery drug therapy to lower the antibodies prior to transplant. This is done successfully in several medical centers throughout the country.
We live in California and the transplant would be done at UCSF in San Francisco.
As a Mom, I can see the deterioration in his health and the effects of dialysis on his body.

My unle is in need of a kidney. He has tried asking some of his friends and family.But they are either a different blood type or are not willing to do it. I’ve seen my uncle get hurt many times while looking for a kidney. Each time he gets hurt I think he’s mad at me but he is actually depresed. I’m just an eleven year old but I really care about my family’s feelings. And if my uncle dies everyone in my family will get depresed. Especially my great grandmother. I would like to offer encouragement to anyone thinking of donating a kidney. In November, 1966, I donated a healthy kidney to save the life of my 17-year-old daughter. My remaining kidney is still doing its job after 43 years.
We were part of an experimental program at Stanford Medical Center conducted by Dr. Samuel Koontz, which changed the former rate of success for kidney transplants from 50% to almost 100%.
A year later, when Dr.Christian Barnard performed the first successful heart transplant in South Africa in 1967, he stated in an interview that he had used techniques developed at Stanford.
A few years later, Dr. Koontz moved to a hospital in Brooklyn, and from there, he traveled the world teaching his techniques. He died in 1981 or 82 from a mysterious illness he had encountered in Africa.
I have never understood why Dr. Koontz has not been credited with his very important contribution to the success of all modern organ transplants.
He should have had a Nobel prize!!
