So you want a new kidney but not all the adverse effects that come with the medications. Or you think the cost of the medications make it prohibitive? There might be some good news on the VERY close horizon. A number of hospitals are participating in clinical trials to investigate the potential of using bone marrow from the donor to “trick” the recipients body into accepting the new organ. The process requires bone marrow from the donor to be injected into the recipients body.
Here’s is a REALLY quick drawing of how it works – you’ll notice radiation is included – at least in the model I read about, as is short term immunsuppression – both are not needed after the initial induction period.
Hospitals actively running pilots like this include: Mass General Hospital in Boston,MA and Northwestern Hospital in Chicago (First time transplants ONLY for both sites).

Wow! I wish I knew about this option when I had my kidney/pancreas transplant…
In June 2007 my husband had surgery for a broken leg & was infected with MRSA during surgery at Vanderbilt Hospital. He was administered an antibotic that destroyed his kidneys and has been on dialysis since July 2007 (we do home hemo dialy six days a week). Apx 19 surgeries laters he is totally disabled. I was tested & found out in Jan that although I am a match, Vanderbilt refuses to use my kidney because of high blood pressure & other borderline test results. Dialysis is very hard on him & we are being forced to close our small family business. We loss our 40 yr old disabled son this year and my husband is now in deep depression. I am desperate for him to have a kidney transplant, any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely yours
Elaine Pennington

This really could be spectacular for us waiting for new transplants. I believe that Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles has also started to perform this procedure. Any advance in technique is good for all of us.
This sounds good. Hopefully, this will come sooner rather than later. It will really help a lot knowing that there is a shortage in organs.
