A number of people have asked me recently – how much does a transplant cost – the surgery – not the 1 year cost of medications. So I did a little research and this is what I’ve come up with, there is VERY little information out there published, printed or otherwise – so with roughly 4 sources, I took the average. I’ll ask you to comment and let me know what your surgery cost (Total, not what insurance paid, and I’ll update accordingly)
-
The cost of kidney dialysis averages about $44,000 per year per patient (Univ of Maryland, 1993 data)
-
Kidney transplant procedure costs can range widely but most average from $25,000 to $150,000 (Emory)
-
$38,000 for a kidney transplant (Health Care Technology)
-
Random posts throughout the web ($50,000)
The average of these four references is about :$54,875 – which covers the Hospital, Operating Room, Supplies, staff, nurse, surgeon and medications in hospital
Editor’s Note: What I consider as the total cost of surgery is the following: OR, Supplies, Staff, Nurse, Surgeon, Medications in OR, Anesthesia – not the hospital room or after patient care – what the hospital charges and not what insurance pays – hope that clarifies things.

My 3 year old son, Derek, just received a kidney transplant from his father at UCLA August 30, 2007. The bills that have been submitted to our health insurance for the transplant and hospitalization are well over $150,000(US.) For a child they spend more time in the hospital and ICU which can make a HUGE difference. My son also had a nephrectomy, to allow the transplant to fit, which also played a part.
Great site I will add you to our blogroll.
I’m a bit confused by the reference to “total cost, not what insurance paid”. I assume that means to add back your personal deductible to the total. SPKTx(July07), not KTx, so unless I got a 2 for 1 deal, the price of mine is likely to be higher. The total of the individually lined items that the Hospital billed insurance was $230,000.00 and the Hospital accepted $115,000.00. This total included one outpatient visit/procedure at the Tx hospital to remove the stent in the ureter, 6 weeks post Tx.
my name is sandra from england and a patient with kidney failure and would under go a kidney dono but would like to know the aberage cost of present transplant including after operation care plus medication.
A kidney transplant surgery will cost around $15000-20000 in India. This is assuming that a matching donor is available and all tests have been conducted. I have a friend who traveled to India for her son’s kidney transplant surgery. We took help from folks at http://www.india4health.com. They helped coordinate with the hospital and help arrange stay and airtravel. Its best to avoid traveling to India during the summer (April-July). Its just too hot in certain parts of the country.
Does medicaid insurance covers kidney transplant or no?
since 2007 the economy has driven health care costs through the roof,I am heading in that direction myself being a severe diabetic. I have been doing some checking around and most of the info I have recieved says now it is 20% more than it was 2 years ago and most won’t even talk to you unless you have that 20% in cash on hand. they figure you can live on dialisis for the rest of your life which isn’t too long since some people’s bodies don’t handle it very well. if your like me with complications from diabetes that ruined your kidneys, they usually won’t even approve the transplant. they figure the same thing will happen to the new one. there is plenty of info about it out there but the info you really need they don’t want to tell you. thats why people are going outside the us to have the surgry done. just wait until obama changes our health care like canada’s then lets see you get one.
